How it Works
The Donate Life US Virgin Islands Tissue and Eye Donor registry is administered by LifeLink of Puerto Rico, the federally designated non-profit organ procurement organization (OPO) that serves the U.S. Virgin Islands. The registry coordinates with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Lions Eye Bank of Puerto Rico to document and carry out each individual’s decision to donate.

- HOW DOES THE DONATION PROCESS WORK
When identifying a potential donor, all hospitals in the US Virgin Islands must contact LifeLink of Puerto Rico. Upon receiving this call, LifeLink assesses whether organ or tissue donation may be able to occur. The donor registry is checked to see if the potential donor is registered as an organ, tissue and/or cornea donor. If they are registered, this information will be shared with their family. If they did not register, the family will be asked to make a decision on behalf of their loved one. Once donation plans are confirmed, the donor’s family will be consulted about the donor’s medical and social history. LifeLink bears all expenses incurred during the donation process and consults the national database to determine the match between the donor and the patients who need a transplant. Potential recipients are determined based on medical criteria, such as blood and tissue type. LifeLink coordinates the donation process through the time organs are transported to be transplanted into the intended recipients.
